Upcoming Events

October 19, 2008 by TheMoviesClub · Leave a Comment

Being a club it’s nice for members to meet face to face, and not just interact online. So we will be setting up movie screenings each month.  Some will be classic independent movies, that are simply good movies. The majority will be showing movies that have not been released and are potential acquisitions for TheMoviesClub.

Our first surprise movie will be shown in November, so watch out for further announcements.

Long Tail wags the dog

October 18, 2008 by Andy Whittaker · Leave a Comment

Some of the Studios are now thinking they are dominating the online space, ie they have a website and a new way to get more money out of their audiences.  Philippe Dauman of Viacom states “If you have a great brand supported by great content, there has never been a better time to reach more consumers”.

But we think they are still seeing the world from a rather conventional point of view, and that they think the internet is simply an extra channel to extend their reach.

Looking at the independent sector, things are far less clear.  New efficient ways are needed to reach increasingly fractured audiences, and not just territory by territory.  Our view is that we need better movies, obviously.  And it’s key to build a conversation with Audiences, and let them influence the creative aspects.  If you start to do that, then there is a chance to prosper in the new world, and over time the Long tail will start wagging the dog.

London Film Festival Kicks off

October 13, 2008 by Andy Whittaker · Leave a Comment

So it’s that time of year, as the dark nights draw in and movie lovers flock to London cinemas to catch a part of the festival, and see films that have usually played at previous festivals, a festival of festivals so to speak.  Last night we were lucky enough to get to see the Opening night film Frost/ Nixon complete with a red carpet London première and party.

The movie re-runs the real life interviews between British talk show host David Frost (who was there in person last night) and disgraced former president Richard Nixon- which took place in 1977.  The movie was as good as expected, with great acting throughout.

The films we are looking forward to next is Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, and less so the screening of Quantum Of Solace.  James Bond and film festivals seems such an odd mix, and just wrong.

There are a number of gems hidden in the festival, and we will be looking to uncover them all for our members, as the London Film Festival sees us  move into the next phase of TheMoviesClub.  More on that next week, so stay tuned.
